Drive Bender - Combine multiple hard drives into a single pool
Review by on
If you don't have enough storage space, you can just install an additional hard drive, which is a cheaper solution, but you will encounter a few limitations when partitioning the space. This is where Drive Bender comes in. It gives you the possibility of combining the storage space of multiple hard drives into a single pool. In other words, if you have multiple hard drives in your computer, you can use them and partition their space as if you had a single storage device. Unlike RAID-based utilities, Drive Bender is more flexible and it ensures data safety. What's more, the program allows you to combine different types of hard drives, without any limitations.

Drive Bender provides full support for Windows XP and all later platforms, including various Server editions. The program requires an additional driver, but the setup wizard will install it for you. Also, you have to reboot your machine, once the program is installed. The good news is that you don't have to make any complicated settings during the installation process. Although Drive Bender is not free, a fully functional trial version is available, which you can use for 60 days, without any restrictions.

The user interface consists of several sections, in which you may create new pools, add new drives to a pool, create mount points and perform other operations. To help you get started, the program provides detailed instructions and descriptions at every step. Furthermore, you can launch a wizard, which can help you pool your hard drive, with step-by-step instructions. When it comes to creating a pooled drive, you can opt for a new one or convert an existing Windows drive to a Drive Bender pooled drive. Additionally, you can decide to create a pooled drive without modifying the system, if you wish to test the program's functionality before anything else.

Pools and available drives are displayed in separate sections of the interface. You may create one or more pools and switch between them at a moment's notice. Also, the program provides various details for created pools, including their total space, reading and writing speeds and others. Drivers are listed together with options for adding or merging them into the current pool and for converting them into pooled drives. Drives can be added to a pool as they are or you can format them first. Additionally, you can enable drive volume renaming and manage drive letters, before adding a drive to a pool. Furthermore, Drive Bender is capable of displaying SMART attributes for each hard drive that is connected to a pool.

Pooled drives use the standard NTFS file system and you can remove them at any time and read them on other computers. The best part is that the stored data will remain safe, due to Drive Bender's file redundancy system, which is based on file duplication. In other words, the files you store into a pool will be written on two physical hard disks simultaneously. Another advantage of this system is the fact that it doesn't have a significant impact on performance, when writing data, like RAID systems.

Pros:
You may combine multiple drives into a single storage pool, without formatting any drives. The program allows you to choose which drives to add to the pool. It is capable of reading SMART information from each pooled drive and its file redundancy system can prevent any damage to your data.

Cons:
There are no obvious functionality gaps to mention.

Drive Bender gives you the possibility of pooling the storage space of your hard drives in a completely safe and flexible manner.
